Feminism. Some people see it as a scary word. It’s not. Nor is it a ‘bad’ word. Or an unpleasant one. Feminism is simply a movement aiming for equality.
EQUALITY. Less awkward for most people to use. Because we understand equality. We get it. Equality is wanting people to be equal. Equal rights. Equal treatment. Equal pay even. So, what’s the difference between that and feminism?
Nothing, really.
So, why are there so many people against feminism? Surely everyone wants equality, right? Doesn't that make everyone a feminist?
I think the reason people are so opposed to feminism is because they don’t fully understand it.
Here are some common misconceptions when it comes to what feminism is:
“Man hating”
“Only for women”
“For prudes/lesbians”
Now, let me talk you through why they’re all bullsh*t...
Man hating
Oh, men. As a feminist and an open Harry Styles enthusiast, I can assure you we don’t hate you. Feminism isn’t about trying to abolish men, it’s about trying to abolish the unfair patriarchy. Because feminists have this insane belief that men and women should be equal in life. Feminism isn’t just for women’s rights either. It’s for the men that aren’t allowed to show emotion because it’s “girly”. It’s for the men who want to wear women’s clothes. And the men who face mental, physical, emotional abuse from their partners. We are not against you. We are with you. Which brings me onto my next point…
Only for women
Nooo. No. no. no. Feminism isn’t just for women. You believe in equality between the sexes? Cool, you a feminist, bro. You believe that a rape victim shouldn’t be judged on what they were wearing? Come join us at the feminist table. You think men and women deserve equal pay for doing the same job? Congratulations, because yes, you are in fact a feminist, my friend.
For prudes/lesbians
Again, as a feminist and an open heterosexual, I can confirm that’s not true. I mean, I’m running out of things to say here other than FEMINISM IS NOT A BAD THING. In fact, feminism is here so we don’t label people things like “prude” or “lesbian” just because they don’t agree with you. It’s so we don’t judge a girl’s worth by her the length of her skirt. So we don’t put each other down to make ourselves feel better. Feminism is needed so that maybe one day, instead of teaching our girls to be conservative around boys if they want to be safe, we teach our boys to control themselves and be respectful around girls, no matter what they’re wearing.
So you see, feminism is simply about wanting equality. I guess some people just don’t get it. I asked people why they think some folk are so opposed to feminism, (then I put it into a video below):
Before I go, I just want to say: for the record, I’m a feminist. I’m a proud feminist. And I will continue to support feminism until we no longer need it.
